Dear Justin Trudeau,
The evidence is in. The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that we are running out of time and may have passed the tipping point. We need action now.
I am calling on the Federal government to lead the way and embrace the challenge of creating One Million Climate jobs in Canada, by using massive public investment in public transportation, clean renewable energy and energy efficiency.
With just 5% of the federal budget, we can create millions of jobs in these four areas:
- Clean Renewable Energy-- By investing $23.3 billion in public renewable energy over five years, Canada could create 290,000 jobs while reducing emissions between 44 and 100 million tonnes annually.
- Energy Efficiencies/Green Building-- By investing $30 billion to increase the energy efficiency of Canada's building stock over five years, we could create 438,000 jobs, while reducing emissions between 32 and 126 million tonnes annually.
- Public Transit-- By investing $17.6 billion to improve and expand public transit we could create 223,000 jobs, reducing emissions between 11 and 20 million tonnes per year.
- High-Speed Rail Transport-- By investing $10 billion to stimulate higher speed public trial, we could generate another 101,600 jobs while reducing emissions between 1 and 5 million tonnes per year.
Market forces on their own are not in a position to provide the kind of transition that will prevent catastrophic climate change. Governments must step up to the plate by working and providing leadership for the common good and public interest.
Creating One Million Climate Jobs can both reduce Canada's greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and create decent paying jobs while addressing socioeconomic inequalities.
I urge you to lead the way and embrace the challenge of pushing Canada's economy in an alternative, sustainable, path.
