Getting to Work: Organizing against Climate and Labour Precarity

Join Fight for $15 and Fairness UofT and Leap UofT for “Getting to Work: Organizing against Climate and Labour Precarity” on Monday November 19th from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Workers’ Action Centre.

Yes, the end of the semester is approaching, and we’re exhausted—not just from midterms and final papers, but from the provincial government’s continual assault on all the structures that will make futures possible for our communities. From the cutting of the carbon tax to the attack on Bill 148, environmental and labour protections are under assault from all sides. How do we build the coalitions we need to fight back against Ford’s austerity logic?

Precarity is endemic in both our economy and ecology, exacerbated through a politics of austerity and climate inaction. We want to bring the labour and environment lens together for an action-oriented panel and workshop event that will focus on the most pressing labour and climate issues of our time, and through which the exchange of knowledge and skills can be transformed into collective political action.

Join us to talk coalition politics and build the skills we need to organize across campus movements! For the first half, we will have four panelists talk about building alliances between labour and environmental movement strategies. The second portion will move into breakout groups, each of which will be focused on building hard campaigning skills, including power mapping, petitioning, relationship building, accessible campaign communication, media relations, and creative actions.

A vegan dinner and snacks will be provided!

Meet the Panelists:

* Carolyn Egan, President of the Steelworkers’ Toronto Area Council and Co-Chair of the Good Jobs for All Coalition
* Bruno Dobrusin, Coordinator of the One Million Climate Jobs Campaign at the Green Economy Network.
* Megan Whitfield, President of the CUPW Toronto Local 626

This event is in an elevator-accessible space with an accessible washroom. For any other accessibility-related concerns, please send us a message!
